Trade Winds (1992)

Sections of a transported body are contained within four roughly hewn shipping crates organised crucifix-like, around the four points of the maritime
compass. Haunting soundscapes create an acoustic depth for reflection on Britain’s role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade (the British slave trade was most dominant between 1640 and 1807, when it was abolished). The work is a reminder of the relationship between slavery and British industrialisation, referencing the price paid by enslaved African people for the development of contemporary global capitalism.
